Overview

The being known as the Adjudicator belongs to an unknown but massively powerful alien race. Deemed insane by his peers, his overseers gave him a starship and permission to play with worlds they didn't care for, on the condition that he never bothered them or thought about them again.

History

The Adjudicator spent eons visiting worlds, judging their civilizations' level of development, and obliterating them when found wanting. Throughout that time, he ended forgetting about his overseers and deluded himself into thinking he was a judge of worlds.

Eventually he came upon Earth. Expecting to find humans had annihilated each other for now, he was surprised and intrigued by their continued existence, as well as their heroes'. His cosmic awareness showed him the existence of alternate Earths, three of them closely bound to the world he intended to judge, and he decided to test each Earth to discover the reason of mankind's survival, indifferent to the fact that destroying one single world would set off a chain reaction which would annihilate every Earth across the Multiverse.

In order to judge every Earth he spawned four mounted servants, modeled after ancient Earth legends and sent them out. Nevertheless, his Horsemen were fought by several heroines: Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Raven, Starfire and Wonder Girl of Earth-One; Black Canary, Huntress and Power Girl of Earth-Two; and Phantom Lady of Earth-X.

Through those battles, the Adjudicator judged that it was the human capability for self-sacrifice which was responsible for the species' survival. He found humans intriguing, but not intriguing enough to be spared. He captured the heroines who opposed his servants, intending to save them as specimens of the four Earths he intended to destroy, and prepared to blast all Earths into oblivion.

However, the eleven heroines broke out of their energy cells and fought his four Riders again. Annoyed, Adjudicator decided they would be obliterated together with their homeworlds, but Wonder Woman managed to ensnare the Adjudicator in her magic Lasso and ask who had appointed him judge, jury and executioner of worlds. Despite himself, the Adjudicator found himself curious and tried to recall what he had forgotten. Upon remembering his overseers he realized he had broken their agreement for which he would be punished.

Angrily he prepared to blast the heroines and their Earths to smithereens, but he was retrieved by his overseers before he had the chance to do so.

This version of Adjudicator, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985-86 Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series.
