Synopsis for "Complicated Shadows"

X. Moore taunts a captive Bootleg, telepathically overpowers her, and interrogates her about her father. At the burned out remains of her family estate, Pilot and Davies watch emergency responders carry off her father’s corpse. Pretending to be D.C. cops, they learn from a local police captain that Bootleg was not found and witnesses saw Sundance. Dash, Kodiak, and Reign watch from nearby woods as Charade removes evidence from the rubble. At the Torch Society, Constantine Brunosso expresses concern over Moore’s ambitions, and an associate warns that the late Jack Rourke may yet be the greater threat. Elsewhere, Moore informs Smyth that Bootleg knew nothing of interest and plans to kill her. They then watch their operative Bete Noir practice by dismembering mannequins of the New Men. In the car with Davies, Pilot worries about the team as Charade teleports them into Moore’s wine cellar. Detecting the disturbance, Moore, Smyth, and Bete Noir find them, and Charade finds he cannot teleport the team away. When Dash asks what happened to Bootleg and Sundance, Moore has Bete Noir massively disorient them. Later, Moore returns to tormenting Bootleg.

Notes

  • This is the final issue of the series.
  • This issue includes pin-ups of Bootleg, Charade, Dash, Kodiak, Pilot, Reign, Sundance, and Bete Noir by Chris Sprouse and Al Gordon.

Trivia

  • Due to the series' cancellation, the story ends on a cliffhanger, and the outcome of the New Men's conflict with X. Moore is never revealed.
