Synopsis for "Book 1: The Annunciation"
A man dressed in black arrives at an isolated farmhouse to see one of its residents, a young girl named Mary Margaret, who may be experiencing stigmata. Her bleeding hands confirm this miracle. She explains the bleeding began at the same time as her prophetic dreams, in which she has visions of extraordinary people, like a young blond boy with wings like an angel. Meanwhile, in Vermont, Warren Worthington III undergoes some drastic physical changes. The young track star’s athletic performance excels to Olympic proportions, but his body continues to drop weight, and most alarmingly, two painful lumps have developed on his back. These, he keeps secret. He writes his parents a letter begging them to let him come home to deal with his body’s transformation, but decides against sending it. Meanwhile, Warren’s widening emotional distance irritates his girlfriend Amanda, while his track rival Brandon grows exceedingly jealous of Warren’s life. Back at the farmhouse, the man in black extracts whatever clues he can from Mary Margaret about her visions. Because he wants no physical evidence to exist of divine miracles, he takes drastic measures with both Mary and her mother, and vows to find the angelic boy from her prophecies. Warren, meanwhile, wakes up from a nightmare to discover a strange, white feather in the center of his room.
