History

Corto Maltese is the name of a small island off the coast of South America.

Earth-31

Corto Maltese was the site of a rebel uprising against the government, which is backed by the United States.[2] Due to rising tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, which supports the rebels, Superman was dispatched by the U.S. President to intervene in subduing the uprising. However, once Superman's presence in Corto Maltese was confirmed the Soviets retaliated by launching a nuclear missile at the U.S. Though Superman managed to divert the missile to an empty desert before it detonates, the warhead served its purpose to disrupt all electronics and communications in the Western Hemisphere, and causing mass chaos in the aftermath.[3]
