A series of strange airline accidents draw the attention of the Crimson Avenger. Lee Travis then receives a tip that rubber magnate H.A. Powers is nearly bankrupt. Further investigation reveals that Powers has collected insurance money from each of the accidents leading to his bankruptcy. The Crimson then kidnaps Powers and places him aboard the next plane upon which Powers has planted a bomb. The businessman tosses the bomb from the plane, preventing the accident. Slam and Shorty attempt to enroll at Merrivale University. Thier applications are denied because neither man has completed high school. The university registrar allows them to enter school when he learns they are detectives.

After they are nearly murdered, Slam and Shorty return to the registrar who informs them that a killer is loose, and he needs their help. Slam agrees to help, but Shorty flees town. Slam discovers that the registrar himself is out to kill them. The registrar admits to stealing school funds and thought Slam and Shorty were out to catch him. Shorty returns in the nick of time to prevent the man from killing Slam. The detectives then leave college with a reward for catching the thief.
