Synopsis for "The Phalanx Covenant - Life Signs part 3: The Light of a Tainted Dawn"
Shinar boasts that the Babel Spire will enable the Phalanx to conquer the world, claims they manipulated Douglock into bringing Forge to them, and declares that Forge will enable the birth of the next generation of Phalanx. Cannonball realizes the Spire is comprised of local villagers the Phalanx have forcibly assimilated, and he and Wolfsbane go on the attack. Douglock knocks them out to make Shinar believe he is still loyal to the Phalanx, but Shinar sees through his ruse and orders all three of them to be added to the Spire. At Mont St. Francis, Shatterstar argues the remaining members of Excalibur, X-Factor, and X-Force should take action, but Havok explains that the X-Men and their allies are fighting the Phalanx on multiple fronts. Back in Italy, Shinar brings an entranced Forge to a set of Phalanx gestation pods and orders him to deliver them a steady power supply until they are ready to hatch. In the Babel Spire, Douglock tells Cannonball and Wolfsbane he can use their life energy to stop the signal to the alien Phalanx from being sent. Sam and Rahne refuse and convince Douglock they will work together instead. Nearby, Nightcrawler’s attack group approaches in X-Factor’s magnetic-powered aircraft. Upon locating the Phalanx, he has Polaris destroy the craft, and the group attacks. Douglock, Cannonball, and Wolfsbane reach the top of the Spire, and Douglock explains they can save the villagers inside the Spire if one of them sacrifices themselves. Below, Shinar battles Nightcrawler’s group. Blaming himself for Cypher’s death long ago, Cannonball wants to sacrifice himself, but Douglock does so instead. Nightcrawler finds Forge and encourages him to resist the Phalanx’s control. Douglock’s act reverts the people comprising the Spire to human form, stops the signal, and overloads the remaining Phalanx. Shinar howls at their defeat and disintegrates. Douglock reappears, hugs Wolfsbane, and tells Shadowcat the Phalanx now have no reason to exist, but he does. Nearby, Forge reasserts his will and creates a device that destroys the Phalanx gestation pods.
