Synopsis for "Theories of Relativity"

At the Pentagon, Mystique kills Gen. Armond Guadier, a backer of the anti-mutant Friends of Humanity, in retaliation for Friends leader Graydon Creed sending Sabretooth to kill her. The next day, Creed learns of Guadier’s death while staying at his lover’s French villa. An investigator Creed hired confirms Mystique is his mother and reveals he has a brother. When the investigator demands more money to disclose the brother’s identity, Creed beats the man until he whispers it in Creed’s ear. The revelation infuriates Creed, he kills the investigator, and he deduces Mystique is manipulating him. Summoned by Forge, Nightcrawler arrives at Dulles International Airport disguised by an image inducer. After seeing a man hit his young son, Kurt teleports the man to the top of a nearby building, berates him for his abuse, then teleports him back and makes him apologize. Along with Rogue, Nightcrawler attends Guadier’s funeral, and they see Creed is there. The minister derides Guadier as a racist traitor and kicks open his coffin, revealing his corpse is wired with explosives. The minister then reveals himself as Mystique in disguise. Rogue lifts Guadier’s corpse into the air before it detonates, sparing the other attendees. Military personnel open fire on Mystique, but Nightcrawler teleports her to safety. When he asks what she is up to, she rants about Creed, punches Kurt in the gut, hints at a connection they share, tells him to come home to learn more, and escapes. The military fires at Kurt, but Rogue picks him up and flies away. Later in Forge’s office, Creed denies all connection to Guadier, but Forge warns Creed he will be taken down eventually. Creed retorts that he will purge mutantkind and leaves. Nightcrawler and Rogue enter, having listened from the next room, and Forge tells them Mystique raided his files on the Friends of Humanity while she lived with him. He lends Kurt and Rogue an aircraft and sends them to bring her in. Later aboard his helicopter, Creed detects the two heading for Caldecott County, Mississippi. En route, Rogue tells Nightcrawler how Mystique found her as an adolescent runaway and took her in. After they arrive at the house Mystique raised her in, Kurt recalls declining to run away from the circus with his foster sister because of his demonic appearance. Just then, Creed arrives, tells Kurt they are brothers, and attacks. Once Kurt restrains him, Creed reveals how a frightened mob ran Mystique down after she gave birth to Kurt, and she let them toss him over a waterfall. Kurt refuses to believe it, and Creed accosts him, raging at coming from a family of mutants. Nearby, Rogue remembers how her absorption powers first manifested when she kissed her friend Cody, leaving him in a coma. Disguised as an adult Cody, Mystique approaches and tries to absolve Rogue of her guilt, but Rogue forces Mystique to revert to her true form. They discuss their strained relationship until Creed arrives with an unconscious Nightcrawler. Mystique pulls a gun on Creed, boasts of abandoning him when he was a boy, and gloats that it was she who tossed the infant Kurt over a waterfall to save herself. Horrified, Nightcrawler drops his image induced disguise as Creed and disarms her. Mystique starts to apologize, but the real Creed cuts her off, angry that Kurt did not kill her. Creed’s helicopter picks him up and opens fire, backing Kurt and Mystique onto a cliff. Rogue slams it but not before it strikes the cliff with a missile, sending Kurt and Mystique dangling over the edge. Realizing Rogue can only save one of them, Mystique lets go and falls. Creed escapes, and Rogue carries Nightcrawler away.
