Synopsis for "Proof for a Pardon"Edit
Bill Dudley, an innocent man, is two hours away from being executed, when The King breaks into the Governor’s office at the State Capital, wanting a pardon for Dudley, brandishing a pistol, with a story to tell. He recounts the story of the murder of Ed Frame, and has an unorthodox explanation for what really happened. The Governor doesn’t buy it at all, so the King punches him out, and disguises himself as the Governor. He forges the Governor’s signature (perfectly) on a pardon form, and has it radiographed to the prison. Then he changes back into his tuxedo and top hat, and carries the unconscious governor downstairs and loads him into the back seat of a big sedan, where the Witch keeps him covered with a pistol while The King drives them to the home of the late Ed Frame. The King goes inside and abducts Mrs. Frame at gunpoint, and she joins them in the car. Next the King visits Walter Williams, punches him out, and brings him along. Jim Smith likewise is brought along at gunpoint.
The King and the Witch take these four out to the late Ed Frame’s island, where the King disguises himself as the murdered man, to trick the real murderer into confessing. It works, and Jim Smith turns out to be the guilty party. The Witch had figured it out, based on the unique properties of a piece of jewelry, stolen earlier (by an associate of hers), from Jim Smith; she had figured out the frame-up, and enlisted the King to help her prove it to the governor, who ends up deciding, at story’s end, that the forged pardon of Bill Dudley should not be revoked.
