Synopsis for "Winners Never Quit"
In Los Angeles, the creature NM-E has decimated the superhero team The Squad, killing member Forsa, maiming D.J. Blast, and injuring Starburst and Tom Hawke a.k.a. Hardcase. Hardcase moves to attack, but D.J. Blast convinces him to take the unconscious Starburst and flee. As the super-strong Hardcase leaps away, D.J. Blast unleashes a massive burst of energy, vaporizing himself and the creature. Later at a hospital, a doctor tells Hardcase that Starburst is comatose and unlikely to ever recover. A year later, Hardcase has become a movie actor. After filming a scene, his jealous co-star demands more prominence in the movie, but Hardcase rebuffs him. Next, a cop stops by Hardcase’s trailer for an autograph and asks him when he will return to crimefighting. Traumatized by the death of his teammates, Hardcase is not confident in his ability to fight other superhumans a.k.a. “Ultras”. Meanwhile, an Ultra calling himself Head Knocker walks into a bank and announces he is robbing it. The cop visiting Hardcase gets the call to respond and leaves. As the police arrive at the bank, Hardcase returns to filming. Hearing their gunfire, he decides to intervene and jumps to the scene. Seeing Head Knocker has killed the cop he was just talking to, Hardcase attacks and leads the villain away from the bank. He then picks up a police car and smashes Head Knocker with it repeatedly, knocking him out. Shortly afterward, he tells the media he is back as a superhero. Far away in an underground lair, Rex Mundi monitors world news, sees that Hardcase is still alive, and grows angry.
