Synopsis for "Alone"
Through a skylight, Night Man watches SFPD Lt. Carleton Briggs and Sgt. Maureen Dade examine a murder victim with his chest torn open. Night Man enters and relates his recent encounter with Rhiannon, deducing the current victim is her latest. He wants to trade information, but Briggs and Dade are hostile so he leaves. He returns to his apartment to examine photos he took of the murder scene and notes the victim had a brochure for the Golden Gate Recreation Area. Next, Night Man accesses land records and discovers Rhiannon has owned the estate at Mount Diablo under her “Rita Diamond” alias since 1909. Further research uncovers murders matching her modus operandi dating back almost as far. Night Man confronts her fiancé Roger Carrington at his apartment, but he insists Rita is a victim. When Night Man says she is a criminal, Carrington goes berserk and attacks. Night Man realizes she has hypnotized him and knocks him out. After finding salt water on Carrington’s car, Night Man calls his father who suggests it came from sea spray at Fort Point. He goes to the fort and finds Rhiannon waiting for him. She notes their mutual attraction and leads him into a trap on the roof. Tangled in a net, he has a minute to free himself before a cannon aimed at him fires. After Night Man cuts himself free just in time, Rhiannon deems him worthy and invites him to be her lover. He says she is a murderer, but she insists she only kills to survive. She knocks him off the roof, but he hangs on by a piece of wire railing. Claiming she loves him, she reaches for him, but he shocks her with a taser in his glove, and she falls into the surf below. After pulling himself up, Night Man returns home and plays the blues over the radio.
