Synopsis for "Genesis"

Near Saturn in the Marvel Universe, an alien probe scans the Phoenix Force heading toward Earth. In Massachusetts, the X-Men arrive at Xavier’s School to answer a call for help from headmaster Banshee. He and student Jubilee take the team into the school's Biosphere where their enigmatic ally Gateway has drawn a large image of the Phoenix on the ground. Unexpectedly, Gateway generates an interdimensional portal, and Banshee, Jubilee, and the X-Men are sucked into it. At Project PEGASUS, the Squadron Supreme detects the portal and then another as the alien probe returns to its native universe—the Ultraverse.

On the Ultraverse’s Earth, the probe dives into the Bermuda Triangle and returns to its creator, part of a vast alien ship buried for eons beneath the sea floor. The ship launched probes to find an energy source sufficient to reunite it with its other half embedded in the Sun, and it has finally found one in the Phoenix Force. Banshee, Jubilee, and the X-Men land on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and Wolverine realizes they are in the Ultraverse. They watch as the buried ship and its other half in the Sun open a rift in the sky, pull the Phoenix Force through, and begin siphoning the Force’s energy. The Phoenix resists, damages the ship, and falls to Earth.

Prime arrives in D.C., questions the X-Men, learns they know Gateway, and attacks them. Elsewhere, the immortal Rex Mundi monitors events from his lair and summons his henchmen Quattro. At the same time, his nemesis the Alternate tracks the Phoenix and decides to send the Solution to intervene. The X-Men battle Prime until the Phoenix arrives and takes him as its host. Angry and in pain, it says it will burn this Earth. At Ultraforce headquarters in Arkansas, Cromwell learns what is happening and deploys Ultraforce. Back in D.C., the Phoenix lashes out at the X-Men, and the ship tries and fails to remotely control it. In New York City, teenager Rose Autumn sees the Phoenix on TV and has a seizure. Ultraforce arrives in Washington, and Prototype immediately blasts the X-Men. Once the Black Knight recognizes them, he orders Ultraforce to stand down, and Storm informs him Prime is possessed by the Phoenix. The Phoenix stuns them all so the two teams retaliate en masse, driving it from Prime’s body.

In California, both Mantra and Night Man sense the Phoenix and decide to find it. In New York, Rose assures her father she is fine, unaware a man outside is watching their apartment. Aboard Ultraforce’s aircraft, Prototype tracks the Phoenix, Storm briefs Ultraforce on its history with the X-Men, and the two teams debate whether to destroy it. In Manhattan, the Exiles’ Amber Hunt tells her teammate Juggernaut about a vision she had of the Phoenix and that she intends to control it. When she sees it in the sky, she knocks out Juggernaut with an energy blast. Ultraforce and the X-Men soon arrive and see that the Phoenix has taken Amber as its new host.

Notes

  • The story continues from the conclusion of the "Phoenix Resurrection - Red Shift" back-up serial in Ultraforce Vol 2 #2.
  • This issue begins with a one-page essay titled "Ultraverse History 101: The Basics" by Paul Benjamin that summarizes the events of the Break-Thru mini-series.

Trivia

  • The ship buried beneath the Bermuda Triangle is the same ancient alien vessel that the Entity was once part of, that wiped out the dinosaurs when it crashed on Earth millions of years ago, and that later made Rex Mundi immortal using nanotechnology.
  • Rogue's appearance in this issue is a continuity error. At the time this story takes place, she had quit the X-Men as seen in X-Men Vol 2 #45.
  • Prime first encountered Gateway in Prime Vol 2 #2.
  • As Storm recounts to Ultraforce, the Phoenix Force impersonated the X-Man Jean Grey until it went insane and committed suicide as seen in X-Men #101-137 and Fantastic Four #286.
  • Amber Hunt had her vision of the Phoenix in All New Exiles #2.
