Unmasked! is a Robin storyline written by Bill Willingham with illustrations by Rick Mays and Francisco Fuente. It's Willingham's debut on the Robin series, continuing into his work in War Drums. The series deals with Tim Drake retiring at the request of his father Jack Drake. This allows Stephanie Brown to take over the position, although Tim will reclaim it in War Games.

Synopsis

Tim Drake begins junior year at his new transfer school, the cliquish Louis E. Grieve Memorial High School. He makes friends with the popular Bernard Dowd on the first day, and begins talking to a pretty girl named Darla Aquista. Batman tracks a S.T.A.R. Labs shipment stolen by Gotham thugs, but he is beaten to it by a sadistic hitman named Johnny Warren. Robin looks for the shipment on his own and is captured by Warren.[1] He beats Warren in a fight, but Warren blows his own hand off and escapes. Tim struggles to hide injuries from his parents, and Batman gives him a new motorcycle to get around faster. Spoiler begins to get jealous of Darla, who has taken an interest in Tim. Warren opens the shipment to find a demonic artifact that immediately bonds with him.[2] Robin and Spoiler are both targeted when Warren returns, now wielding magic energy and calling himself Johnny Warlock. Warlock visits his old boss, crimelord Henry Aquista, and tries to take control of his operation. Eventually he expends too much energy trying to kill Robin and Spoiler, and crumbles to dust. Robin believes he has killed him, but Bruce insists otherwise and it is shown that Warlock is alive and well in Istanbul.[3]

Tim continues to doubt himself over the possibility that he murdered Johnny Warlock, and considers quitting. Bruce is tough on him about not second-guessing, and Stephanie insists that he should take advantage of his gift to save lives. Jack Drake and Dana Winters worry about Tim when they learn he's been lying to them at a parent-teacher conference. Jack searches his room, and finds his Robin equipment behind a hidden panel. He angrily confronts Alfred and Bruce after reading Tim's journals, then puts a gun to Bruce's head and demands his son back. Elsewhere, Warlock pays an assassin named Scarab to kill Robin and make it slow.[4] Warlock tells Aquista to have his men create havoc until they lure out Robin, so Scarab can kill him. Robin returns to the Batcave invigorated by Spoiler's pep talk, and finds his outraged father. Jack Drake yells that he is coming home, but Tim insists that he won't give up being a superhero. Finally Jack agrees not to expose them, and in exchange Tim agrees to quit.[5]
