Synopsis for "Las Cinco Esquinas"

In 1944, La Sangre had faced the Inquisitor as she soon would again. At that time, he had considered her a witch and a demon, and intended to kill her, but while facing her in a foundry, he missed his aim and fell into a vat of molten metal. These days, his view of her has changed strangely.

Shade has not stopped being amazed by how accepting the authorities in Barcelona have been of their vampire vigilante. They are reluctant to let her give herself up to the Inquisitor in order to save the models and designers from the city's fashion show from him. Still, she has to find him before she can do so. In that respect, another vigilante known as Montpellier arrives, and offers his aid.

They are interrupted by news that four of the Inquisitor's acolytes have appeared in different parts of the city with apparent intent to commit suicide. Within a short time, they have all killed themselves, leaving little chance for them to be questioned.

At the morgue with the acolytes' bodies, Shade asks La Sangre what she meant when she said that the Inquisitor's apparent immortality was complicated. She explains that at their first encounter, she defeated him and took a sample of his blood for her collection. A short time later, he returned and was defeated, again and again, until the day when she knew he had been killed by falling into the vat of molten metal. Not so, apparently, as he turned up several more times later. Any time she could she took a new sample, and discovered that the blood belonged to different people. She assumed it meant that an acolyte had taken up his mantle until last year, she took a sample that matched the original Inquisitor's. This would not be so puzzling were he like she and Shade, but he was but a normal man when he died.

Montpellier has determined that each of the acolytes died in a location of one of the Inquisitor's prior defeats - one of which by the current police commissioner's father. La Sangre recalls that one particularly memorable location was not used - the Basilica de la Sagrada Família.

Outside the Basilica, they find many of the Inquisitor's acolytes waiting for them, and Montpellier urges La Sangre to go find the Inquisitor herself while he and Shade fight off his men. Though he had not intended to get as involved as all this, Shade decides to follow La Sangre after taking care of the attackers, and he finds she and her adversary in the middle of a battle for the lives of several people.
