Synopsis for "Sludge vs. Prime"

In her lair beneath Central Park, an old witch casts a spell that summons Sludge and gives her control over him. Kevin Green wakes up after dreaming of the event. Drawn outside, he unwillingly transforms into Prime and flies out his bedroom window. In her lair, the witch tells Sludge how a wizard used the Wertham Stone to imprison her son a century ago. A dimension-hopping imp called Mr. Mischief recently gave her one half of the stone. Now, she wants Sludge to retrieve the other half from the Metropolitan Museum of Art so she can use it to rescue her son. Then, she and her son will conquer the world. That night, Prime is drawn to Central Park, and he sees Sludge leaving the museum with part of the stone. Prime punches Sludge, briefly restoring Sludge’s free will. The witch is watching, however, and uses a spell to regain control of Sludge as well as drain Prime’s strength. Prime and Sludge fight until Sludge knocks Prime into a tree. Too weak to continue, Prime passes out, and Sludge takes the stolen stone to the witch. The next morning, Kevin wakes up in the park and transforms back into Prime, rejuvenated. He tears open a hole into the sewers, and the witch sends Sludge to deal with him. As bystanders watch from above, Prime and Sludge exchange more blows. Meanwhile, the witch unites the two halves of the Wertham Stone and opens a portal to the dimension where her son is trapped. A demonic giant, he emerges but accidentally steps on her, killing her. With her dead, Sludge regains his free will just as Prime punches him through a sewer wall. Prime hears screaming and flies into the air to see monsters crawling from the hole and attacking people.

Notes

  • This is the final issue of Sludge.
  • This issue was published as a flip book with Ultraverse Premiere #8 on the other side. The front and rear covers form a larger image, and the story from this side carries over to the first part of the Ultraverse Premiere side.

Trivia

  • Both the Wertham Stone and the wizard Fredrick who imprisoned the witch's son are named after Fredric Wertham, the psychiatrist and anti-comics activist of the 1950s.
  • To take control of Sludge, the witch invokes "Seniag Llib" which is "Bill Gaines" spelled backward. Bill Gaines was the long-time publisher of EC Comics and Mad magazine.
