History

Early in his superhero career, Static flew by using everyday metal objects like garbage can lids to surf on Earth's electromagnetic field.[1] Eventually, he began to fly on a hover disc which was far more practical.[2] Static has used two discs so far.

Original Disc

Static's first disc was designed and constructed by himself.[2] The disc consisted of eight interlocking plates that, when not in use, were folded up like the sections of a Chinese folding fan.[2] This made it easy for Virgil to hide the disc in his duffel bag.[2] When he went into action as Static, Virgil gave the sections of the disc the same magnetic charge so they unfolded via magnetic repulsion and locked into place to form a three-foot wide circular platform.[2] When Static gave the sections opposing charges, the disc folded back into its compact size via magnetic attraction.

Static propelled the hover disc with imbalances in a self-generated electromagnetic field while steering was simply a matter of shifting his weight and position.[2] He could also fly the hover disc over a distance by using his electromagnetic influence.

Static used his static cling on the soles of his feet so that he remained attached to the hover disc's surface even when he flew upside down. It would take a major loss of concentration or intense electrostatic interference to break Static's bond with the disc.

Static's New Disc

Following the events of Flashpoint, Hardware gave Static a new flying disk which is a complete redesign of the original.[3] The new disc is in fact six interlocking hexagonal discs composed of a lightweight yet very durable metal alloy.[3] When not in use, the disks are stacked on top of each other for easy concealment in Virgil's duffel bag.[3] As Static, Virgil uses his electromagnetism to separate the disks and then make them lock together into a platform on which he can fly.[3] Usually, Static has the disc assume the form of a hexagon though he reconfigure them into virtually any imaginable shape.[3]

The new disc's design enables Static to use it for purposes besides transportation. He can make the discs assume an "l" shape that can shield him from enemy attacks from below.[3] In this "shield mode," the discs protect Static from anything short of high caliber bullets.[3] Static can also use his discs offensively by mentally propelling some or all of them at opponents, who are knocked down by the impact.[3] He has even used a pair of discs as a makeshift sling for his arm after it was injured by Virule.[3]

The remarkable versatility of Static's new disc makes it one of his most valuable crimefighting tools.
