Synopsis for 1st story

Stormwatch, the UN superhuman response force, has sent a team led by Jackson King a.k.a. Battalion to Sarajevo to rescue UN envoy John Windsor and a young ā€œseedlingā€, a latent superhuman.  Battalion and his teamā€”Diva, Fuji, Hellstrike, and Winterā€”successfully drive off attacking militia forces but are then confronted by the Mercs, a group of superhuman mercenaries led by Deathtrap.  While the two teams fight, Windsor tries to lead a group of children to safety, but Deathtrap kills him.  Two days later, Jackson wakes up in his Manhattan apartment to find Christine Trelane a.k.a. Synergy at his door.  She and local police have brought home his teenage brother, Malcolm, who has been arrested.  Thanks to Jacksonā€™s job, however, he and his family have diplomatic immunity.  After Synergy and the police leave, Malcolm relates how two of his friends talked him into robbing a store.  When the police arrived in response to the store alarm, they fled. One of the kids had a gun, he and Malcolm struggled over it, and the kid accidentally shot himself and died.  Furious, Jackson scolds him and tells him to go to bed.  Meanwhile, aboard Skywatchā€”Stormwatchā€™s space station headquartersā€”analysts inform control officer Henry Bendix a.k.a. Weatherman One of an anomalous reading emanating from Chernobyl.  The next morning, Battalion, his family, his team, and Synergy attend Windsorā€™s funeral. The Mercs attack, determined to kill Battalion, and Deathtrap shoots Malcolm during the ensuing battle.  To save his life, Synergy uses her power to activate latent superhuman abilities, causing jets of energy to shoot out from Malcolmā€™s body.
