Synopsis for "Head to Head"

Standing atop his newly-created island, Atalon recalls the Fire People’s once great civilization and how they were driven underground millennia ago. He proclaims he will use the nuclear arsenal they have stolen to reconquer the world. The immortal Rex Mundi watches on his lair’s monitors as the tsunami triggered by the island’s raising causes mass destruction. Elsewhere, the artificial intelligence GENIE puts the agency Aladdin on high alert. Hardcase decides Ultraforce must act and orders Pixx and Topaz to rendezvous with the rest of the team near Cuba. En route, Topaz explains to an amazed Pixx the social structure of her all-female city Gwendor, its all-male counterpart Neros, and how they cooperate to reproduce. She then asks Pixx to help her understand gender relations on Earth. Meanwhile, a joint American, British, and Cuban naval force attacks Atalon’s island, but he obliterates it with his gravity manipulation powers. Ultraforce arrives, and Contrary locates the stolen nukes while the others storm the island. As they battle the Fire People, Ghoul communicates with the spirit of a dead sailor. Realizing Ghoul can talk to the dead, Atalon pulls Ghoul toward him. Prototype grabs Ghoul only to tear two of his limbs off. Atalon launches a nuclear missile and prevents Contrary and Pixx’s aircraft from intercepting it. With Prototype’s rocket boosters damaged, Hardcase hurls him at the missile. He catches it and, guided by Pixx, disarms the warhead just before the rocket impacts the ground. Contrary and Pixx’s aircraft crash into the ocean, but they are immediately saved by Prime. He brings them ashore, apologizes for his previous behavior, and rejoins the team. Hardcase verifies Prototype is alive just before one of the nukes detonates, causing a massive explosion.

Trivia

  • The story strongly implies that it was Rex Mundi who drove the Fire People underground millennia ago.
