Synopsis for "The New Sensation"

Starburst’s spirit reminisces about The Squad’s early adventures. Two days after the team formed, they went to the desert to practice their powers. Their significant others came along, and Linda’s boyfriend Pete became jealous of her growing affection for Tom a.k.a. Hardcase. Later in Watts, the Zulus threatened Jamal a.k.a. D.J. Blast for maiming one of its members when he blew up their guns. He told the rest of The Squad of the threat, and they decided to intervene after agreeing not to kill anyone. The team went to Watts only to learn the Zulus had taken Jamal’s sister and his girlfriend hostage. The Squad stormed the gang’s hideout, disarmed them, and saved the two women. When the police arrived, they arrested The Squad for vigilantism and jailed them. The next day, however, the Los Angeles mayor and chief of police invited them to work with the LAPD. Introduced to the public at a press conference, the team rapidly became famous nationwide. When not aiding the police in dangerous cases, they read letters they received from people asking for help. Once such letter requested help in stopping a man from beating his wife. Infuriated, Hardcase confronted the man, terrified him, and demanded he stop the abuse. That night, Hardcase met Starburst on the beach and told her what he did. Then, he confessed his feelings for her, and they kissed, unaware Pete was watching nearby. Frustrated that The Squad had displaced UltraTech’s Prototype in media popularity, executive Stanley Leland decided to start designing his replacement. Starburst left Pete for Hardcase, and they met for trysts on the roof of The Squad’s new high-rise headquarters. One night, Hardcase saw a TV news report on an abusive husband who killed his family then himself. Hardcase recognized the killer as the man he confronted and, wracked with guilt, broke down crying.
