Synopsis for "Crossroads"
Standing on the Golden Gate Bridge, a guilt-ridden Rogue recalls defeating Ms. Marvel there, permanently absorbing her powers and memories, and hurling her into the water below. Afterward, Rogue flies back to the house where the X-Men are staying and finds Shadowcat grieving outside. Since the Beyonder erased Magik and the New Mutants from existence, Magik’s Soulsword and mystical armor have transferred to Shadowcat, and only she remembers the New Mutants ever existed. Phoenix claims she can eliminate the Beyonder by destroying the universe and asks Rogue and Shadowcat to let her absorb their essences to boost her power. They agree as does the X-Men’s host, former Spider-Woman Jessica Drew. Next, Phoenix absorbs the other X-Men’s life forces, including a defiant Storm’s, and leaves for outer space. Reaching the Shi’ar Galaxy, she takes the essences of the Starjammers and travels to the M’Kraan Crystal. Inside it, she releases the spirits she has taken and explains her plan to unleash the neutron galaxy inside the Crystal, destroying the universe and the Beyonder with it. Phoenix refuses to let Storm talk her out of it and begins the process, but she stops when her cosmic power puts her in telepathic contact with every sentient mind in the universe. Unable to end all those lives, Phoenix gives back the essences she took and teleports everyone back where she found them. In front of Jessica Drew’s house, the Beyonder appears to the X-Men, expresses disappointment, and reveals he wanted Phoenix to destroy the universe because humanity has rejected him. The X-Men denounce him for his behavior, and he takes back the portion of his power he gave to Phoenix. In doing so, he absorbs her experience of contact with all sentient life, and it overwhelms him. Chastened, the Beyonder thanks the X-Men for showing him mortality and vanishes.
