Synopsis for "Nightlines"
In Kuwait, Forge and Henry Gyrich examine the crash site of Asteroid M. Amongst the wreckage, a worker shows them the corpses of the original Acolytes, but Magneto’s body is notably missing. In New York, Jean Grey accompanies Professor X to a television debate with Senator Kelly and anti-mutant activist Graydon Creed. At an orphanage, a nun catches Archangel putting to bed the boy the Acolytes tried to kidnap, and she praises the X-Men’s heroic efforts. In the debate, Xavier criticizes Creed’s demonization of mutants, and Kelly argues for controlling dangerous but denounces genocide. Elsewhere, the Upstarts watch the debate, and Fabian Cortez seethes that the human Creed is a member. Gamesmaster reiterates the point of their competition then announces Fitzroy’s recruit will be their final member. Unaware Xavier is secretly a mutant, the debate moderator challenges his defense of mutants, and Xavier retorts with a fervent call for compassion. At Xavier’s School, Colossus comforts Illyana after she wakes up from a nightmare, assuring her that he will always be there for her. As an Avenger and a publicly known mutant, Beast joins the debate and ridicules Creed. Watching at Harry’s Hideaway, Iceman, Archangel, and Charlotte Jones laugh while Bishop finds something familiar about their waitress. Storm raises a toast to the teammates and allies who have died for the X-Men’s cause. At the TV studio, the debate ends, and Kelly remarks to Xavier how much they have in common. As Jean watches them talk, Kelly’s aide telepathically assures her the Senator is not a monster. Xavier tells Jean they are leaving for France right away, and Cyclops meets them outside. He reveals France is where the Acolytes are based, and the X-Men are moving against them.
