Synopsis for "Death Knell"
John Carter and his crew have recently escaped the city of Therns in a stolen Black Pirate aircraft. Thuvia the Huntress, a beautiful maiden he rescued from a cult, navigates the ship towards the city of Helium, where Princess Dejah Thoris awaits their arrival. A Black Pirate, who is a stowaway, comes out of hiding to attack John. The two duel in a sword fight, but John quickly subdues his opponent. The ship suddenly goes out of control, so they land to see if they can borrow another one from a nearby village. Thuvia remains with the captured pirate as John and Tars Tarkas go inside an old building. Inside, they're greeted by a chubby villager who at first seems friendly, but then he challenges the two to an insane game of battles. While combating several beasts, John determines that something is not right, and he is being used by his foe somehow. He is correct, for it's all an illusion cast by the true enemy, Malada, the White Queen of Barsoom. She is stealing John's warrior powers as he fights. However, John is able to unhinge a giant hanging tapestry which falls on top of the old witch. She stumbles into a pit, falling to her death. John and Tars Tarkas tear down more tapestries, which fill the room, and create a patchwork air balloon to travel to the city of Helium in.

Synopsis for "Combat!"
David Innes is challenged by Jubal the Ugly One to release Dian the Beautiful. As the two begin fighting, Abner Perry and Dian's brother ride up shouting to the two men to stop their insane combat with one another. Jubal flees into the forest, while the others talk of making a plan to defeat the hideous Mahars. They realize they need weapons and books of knowledge in order to build a civilization and thrive. They decide to repair the Iron Mole machine and return to the surface for supplies. When they arrive at the site of the drilling machine, they notice several Gorilla-Men guarding it. They attack them swiftly and win. Soon, they are repairing the vehicle and David confesses his love to Dian, asking her to be his wife. She answers yes, but suddenly Abner is yelling for help. When the two lovers investigate the trouble, they see that Jubal has returned to fight again. Another battle between them ensues, and David is able to wrestle his opponent down. With his fallen foe at his feet and Abner safe, David embraces Dian, thinking of his voyage home.
