Synopsis for the 1st Story
At Xavier’s School, Shadowcat tells Storm she is going to film Cyclops and Jean Grey’s wedding. Beast welcomes arriving guests, including X-Factor’s Polaris who comments that Scott and Jean should have married long ago. Monitoring the event, Uatu the Watcher reveals an alternate timeline where they did.
…What If Scott Summers and Jean Grey Had Married Earlier?
When Beast announces he is leaving the X-Men, Cyclops and Marvel Girl announce their plans to leave as well and get married. The day after their wedding, all the other X-Men quit, too. Scott and Jean become famous mutant rights activists and have a son. Meanwhile, Professor X recruits a new team of X-Men consisting of Aurora, Catseye, Colossus, Northstar, and Storm. When they go to investigate the island of Krakoa, it ambushes them and drains them of their life force, killing them. As its hunger grows, Krakoa attacks Japan, but Sunfire and the Avengers intercept it and combine their powers to kill it. Its body dissolves, and they find the X-Men’s corpses. Sometime later, the original X-Men stand over Professor X’s grave and debate whether they should have stayed with the team.
During the wedding, Nightcrawler asks Archangel if he regrets not pairing up with Jean. He says no, it just was not meant to be. The Watcher presents a timeline where that is exactly what happened.
…What If Scott Summers and Jean Grey Had Never Fallen in Love at All?
On the day Jean Grey joins the X-Men, Angel charms her, and they soon become a couple. During a battle with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in Santo Marco, Angel worries for Jean’s safety, but Cyclops orders them to stay focused on the mission. Sensing a trap, Professor X hurls himself at a door wired with explosives to protect the team and seemingly loses his powers as a result. Cyclops blames Angel and Jean for distracting him and grows short-tempered and surly. The X-Men storm the Brotherhood’s base aboard Asteroid M. They win the battle, but the asteroid breaks up, and Angel has to rescue Cyclops. Once they return to the school, Xavier reveals he faked the loss of his powers, angering Cyclops. Sometime later, the professor announces he is leaving for awhile and appoints Beast team leader, telling Cyclops he is too rigid for the job. Infuriated, Cyclops quits. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch approach him on the street in New York, and Magneto convinces him to join the Brotherhood.
At the wedding reception, Rogue sees Jubilee is not dancing. Sad, she tells Rogue that Wolverine should be there, unaware he is watching from a nearby hilltop. Recalling his long-standing attraction to Jean, the Watcher shows a timeline where he and Phoenix became a couple.
…What If Phoenix Had Fallen for Wolverine?
At Xavier’s School, Cyclops walks in on Phoenix and Wolverine in a lovers’ embrace. She apologizes but tells Scott he was holding her back, and Logan declares the better man won. Soon, Mastermind seduces Phoenix into becoming the Hellfire Club’s Black Queen. With the X-Men’s help, she breaks free of his influence only to transform into the insane Dark Phoenix. Following a genocidal rampage through deep space, Professor X defeats her and restores her sanity. When Shi’ar empress Lilandra condemns her to death, Xavier invokes the X-Men’s right to duel for life. During the team’s battle with the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, Phoenix reverts to Dark Phoenix and destroys the universe.
The Watcher returns his attention to the wedding and wonders what the future holds for Cyclops and Jean as they run through the wedding rice toss.
