Synopsis for "Hidden Depths part 4: A Man Reborn!"
Encouraged by Beast, Wonder Man discovers he can shape shift and replaces his demonic hand. Still, he feels trapped by his past and under his brother’s control. Suddenly, Black Talon bursts in with Baron Zemo, Enchantress, Executioner, Goliath, and Man-Ape. While Beast bests Man-Ape, Simon realizes Zemo is fake and destroys him. Goliath attacks, increasing his size, but Simon increases his own size to match. Incensed, Goliath keeps growing until he discorporates. Knocked out in the battle, Jamie’s dream self sees that Enchantress and Executioner are actually Mephisto in disguise and tells Simon. He dispels them, but then Black Talon teleports him and Beast to Mephisto’s Realm. There, Lotus Newmark introduces herself and takes credit for all of Simon’s recent ordeals. Beast asks why, and Mephisto reveals Simon is immortal and an endless source of power. Back in Los Angeles, Blackheart teleports to the Flores house with Grim Reaper and finds Man-Ape. When Man-Ape mentions Mephisto, Blackheart decides to assault his realm. Jamie’s dream self tells Gloria to gather the Crazy 8 then finds Ginger and Spider trapped in a bizarre alternate dimension. Blackheart, Grim Reaper, and Simon’s parents materialize before Mephisto, and he unleashes his demon horde. Black Talon says he needs a sacrifice to gain more power so Mephisto has him slay Lotus. Meanwhile, Jamie finds her mother alive but imprisoned in an opaque sphere. She tells Simon, and he demands Mephisto release Alex, but Mephisto reveals it was Blackheart and Grim Reaper who took her. Infuriated, Simon attacks his brother, recalls their abusive childhood, and how Eric accidentally started a fire that killed their parents. Out of guilt, Simon abetted his brother’s crimes, let Zemo turn him into Wonder Man, and recently gave the Crazy 8 their powers. At last forgiving himself, Simon tells Eric he can choose to do good. Eric takes a blast from Mephisto meant for Simon and dies in Simon’s arms. Simon then realizes their parents are just illusions created by Blackheart. Simon agrees to help Blackheart in exchange for Alex’s freedom. Blackheart teleports her there, and Simon has her project an image of Hela, distracting Mephisto. As Blackheart and Mephisto brawl, Simon forces Black Talon to send him, Beast, Alex, and Eric’s body back to L.A. They materialize in front of the Crazy 8, and Alex reunites with Jamie. Simon depowers the Crazy 8 by siphoning their ionic energy, says goodbye to Alex and Beast, and flies off to bury Eric. Spider tells Jamie he knows she kept some of her energy and that he did, too. Later, Simon flies over L.A. in a new costume with a new sense of purpose and resolves to protect the world.
Trivia
- Despite her apparent death in this story, Lotus Newmark shows up alive in Avengers Two: Wonder Man & Beast #1 and claims to have no memory of these events.
- Wonder Man and Grim Reaper's memories of their parents dying in a fire are revealed to be false implants created by Mephisto in Avengers Two: Wonder Man & Beast #2. Indeed, their mother is still alive and reappears in Avengers Two: Wonder Man & Beast #1.
- Despite his death in this issue, Grim Reaper returns in Avengers Vol 3 #10.
