Synopsis for "Future Intense"
The stress of being grabbed by an Emplate triggered Shard’s mutant powers, enabling her to break free. The XSE cadets’ adult chaperones had been killed so Bishop grabbed their guns and ordered the group to hide while he and Shirley Baylor held off the Emplates with gunfire. When an Emplate grabbed cadet Hooper, Shard killed him with an energy blast but accidentally killed Hooper, too. Finally, a squad of XSE agents arrived to help them and wiped out the Emplates. A month later, Hecat’e promoted Bishop for his actions, making him the youngest officer in the XSE. In the present, Bishop and Shard continue arguing about their relationship in the Danger Room until she shocks him by playing a simulation of his teammates Malcolm and Randall’s deaths. Bishop and Shard go outside, and he recalls visiting Harmony Base, a compound where humans and mutants lived together, with Malcolm and Randall. Shard asks how he met them, and Bishop recounts Hecat’e introducing Malcolm as a candidate for his squad. Bishop was initially put off by Malcolm’s wealthy background but Malcolm’s ambition and feisty attitude quickly changed his mind. Bishop recruited Randall from Harmony Base, impressed by his spirit and unpredictability. Sometime later, Bishop, Malcolm, and Randall returned to Harmony Base to repel an Exhume attack led by Styglut. The arrival of a second XSE squad turned the tide against the Exhumes, but Malcolm discovered his brother had been killed during the battle. Enraged, Malcolm was ready to execute an Exhume in retaliation but took him into custody instead. Now, Bishop blames himself for Malcolm and Randall’s later deaths. Shard reminds him he could not protect everybody and tells him he expects too much of himself. She assures him he was a good brother to her and credits his help for her promotion within the XSE. Bishop blames that promotion for her death.
